Biological Evidence: Semen and bloodstains on the victims' clothing matched the suspects.

Eyewitness Accounts: Witnesses identified Ranga and Billa's vehicle and their suspicious behaviour.

Psychological Profiling: Both suspects exhibited psychopathic tendencies and a fascination with violence.

The forensic evidence, combined with circumstantial evidence, led to the conviction of Kuljeet Singh (Ranga) and Jasbir Singh (Billa). This case highlights the importance of meticulous forensic analysis and its role in solving complex crimes.

 Role of forensics{crime scene reconstruction}:

Kidnapping Phase

Ranga and Billa had stolen a Fiat car with fake number plates, planning something big in Delhi.

They abducted Geeta and Sanjay between 6:30-6:40 PM. Sanjay put up a fight, and we found bloodstains that confirmed the physical assault.

Movement and Confinement

Time and Event

7:30 PM :They parked near Buddha Jayanti Park

Evening : The kids were confined and assaulted

Night : They headed towards Delhi Ridge forest

9:30 PM : The double homicide happened

Sexual Assault and Murder

Geeta was sexually assaulted before she was killed.

Both kids had fatal sharp-weapon injuries.

They were dumped in the forest to hide the evidence.

A cowherd found their bodies two days later.

Forensic analysis:

Investigators used dactyloscopy to match latent fingerprints from the kidnapping vehicle to the suspects and employed ballistics to link a bullet from Sanjay’s body to a firearm in Billa’s possession. Furthermore, soil analysis and tyre impressions from the crime scene created an irrefutable physical link between the perpetrators and the location where the bodies were found.

 Arrest of suspect:

The arrest of Ranga and Billa was facilitated by a combination of traditional investigative techniques and forensic analysis. The police tracked the stolen Fiat car, which led them to the suspects. Upon arrest, collected physical evidence from the suspects, including clothing and hair samples, which matched the evidence found at the crime scene.

Analysis revealed:

·        Fibres from the car seats matched those found on the victims' clothing

·        Fingerprints on the car and other surfaces matched the suspects

·        DNA analysis confirmed the presence of the suspects' biological material on the victims

These findings, along with eyewitness testimony and circumstantial evidence, built a strong case against Ranga and Billa. The forensic evidence played a crucial role in securing their conviction.

Forensic science played a decisive role in securing the conviction of Ranga and Billa. Led by medical experts like Dr. T.D. Dogra, the autopsies revealed the brutal nature of the crimes, documenting multiple stab wounds on Geetha and an execution-style gunshot wound on Sanjay, along with traces of chloroform used for sedation in both victims.

*    Judgment

The judicial proceedings that began in October 1978 were marked by intense public interest and  courtroom testimony. Despite attempts by the defense to discredit the scientific findings, the prosecution presented a documented case supported by forensic experts.

On December 15, 1978, the court found Ranga and Billa guilty, subsequently sentencing them to death for a crime described as "rarest of rare" due to its exceptional depravity. After several levels of appeals were rejected by the High Court and Supreme Court, the perpetrators were executed at Tihar Jail in 1982.
