EXPERIMENT : 03
Video Explanation
AIM:
TO RECORD ROLLED & PLAIN PRINTS ON A FINGERPRINT CARD AND IDENTIFY THEM.
MATERIAL REQUIRED:
1. Sample – subject
2. Ink pad
3. Fingerprint card
4. Magnifying glass
5. Pencil
6. Gloves
THEORY:
A fingerprint is an impression left behind by the skin found on the inner surface of the fingers. The skin on this area is called friction ridge skin and is found on the palms of the hands, as well as on the toes and soles of the feet. They have general ridge patterns, making it possible to systematically classify them. It is an individual characteristic; no two fingers have indentical ridge characteristic. An individual’s fingerprint remains unchanged during the entire lifetime.
Rolled prints: the upper ten impressions are taken individually, thumb, index, middle, ring, and little fingers of each hand. These are referred to as the “rolled” impressions because the fingers are rolled from one side of the fingernail to the other, in order to obtain all available ridge detail.
Plain prints: the impressions at the bottom of the card are taken simutaneously without rolling, printing all of the fingers of each hand at a forty-five degree angle and then the thumbs. These are referred to as “plain,” “slapped,” or “flat” impressions. The plain impressions are used to verify the sequence and accuracy of the rolled impressions.
PRINCIPLE:
The patterns present on these fingertips are unique to every individual. These patterns can be classified in order to develop class characteristics in the pattern. As well as individual characteristics can also be examined.
PROCEDURE:
• Wear gloves before starting the process.
• Fingers to be printed must be clean and dry. Wiping the individual’s fingers with an alcohol swab and then drying them should prevent perspiration from being a Problem. If the individual’s occupation has caused a wearing down or rough surface on the fingers, use lotion to soften the fingers (be sure to wipe the lotion off before printing).
• The individual being fingerprinted should be asked to stand in front of and at a forearm’s length from the fingerprinting device. The individual should stand to the right and rear of the person taking the fingerprints.
• Grasp the individual’s right hand at the base of the thumb with your right hand. Cup your hand over the individual’s fingers, tucking under those fingers not being printed. Guide the finger being printed with your left hand.
• Roll the finger on the inking plate or porelon pad so that the entire fingerprint Pattern area is evenly covered with ink. The ink should cover from one edge of the nail to the other and from the crease of the first joint to the tip of the finger.
• Gently lift the finger roll down in the similar manner on the fingerprint card in the assigned column for the finger.
• Repeat the steps for each finger and thumb.
• Now, gently place all the four fingers of right hand without the thumb on the ink pad. Apply some pressure and lift them.
• Ask the subject to spacen each finger a little and according to the column space in the fingerprint card, now place the fingers on the card and gently remove without damaging the prints.
• Repeat the above step for left hand fingers.
• Now ink both the thumbs and directly set plain prints on the assigned columns in the fingerprint card.
• Ask the subject to wash, let the fingerprint card dry completely before observing for the patterns.
• Once dried, fill in the card details and with the helpf of a magnifying glass observe the patterns of each pattern.
• Use a pencil to record the pattern on the card.
OBSERVATIONS:
FORENSIC SIGNIFICANCE:
Fingerprints are commonly found on the crime scenes.
They can be easily lifted and developed.
These have potential individual characteristic to identify people.
Proper database is present for biometric matching, aadhar card records fingerprint data in india. Also commonly found in offices and universities.
Rolled prints are more significant than plain prints
The rolled prints cover the complete ridge pattern from left to right side of a
Fingernail. Often on crime scene half or partial prints are found. If only plain prints are taken, side part of the rigdes specially the ridge ends are skipped in the prints. Hence, to ensure complete prints rolled prints are important.
PRECAUTIONS:
1. Do not put exccesive pressure on fingers to absorb ink.
2. Do not use too much ink or the pattern will not be visible, ridges will be too much covered with ink.
3. Always wear gloves while taking prints.
4. Prints should be air dried, not under sunlight or artificial dryerS.
RESULT:
THE ROLLED AND PLAIN PRINTS WERE TAKEN FROM THE SUBJECT ________ & PATTERNS WERE
IDENTIFIED.
1. RIGHT THUMB-
2. RIGHT INDEX -
3. RIGHT MIDDLE-
4. RIGHT RING-
5. RIGHT LITTLE-
6. LEFT THUMB-
7. LEFT INDEX-
8. LEFT MIDDLE-
9. LEFT RING-
10. LEFT LITTLE
