The study of lip print is known as cheiloscopy .It belongs to an area of forensic dentistry that applies to the study of classification of lip impression as a forensic investigation technique . Basically, it is used for the identification of an individual on the basis of lip patterns .
With this biological phenomenon the upper red part of the human lip consists grooves which is studies for the individualization purpose .This lip groove pattern is uniform throughout the life of an individual and remain uninfluenced by any means as like the uniqueness of fingerprint .
Such lip groove pattern are encountered on different kinds of object at scene of crime due to the physical contact of the individual lip with any object such as print on the glass if the person drank from that glass , on any crockery material, at the end of cigarette, prints on surface of window or Almirah, plastic bag or in a tape if the person mouth is bounded with a tape etc. As like the fingerprint the lip print are also found to be in two types visible or latent . The red part of the lips consists a minor amount of salivary and sebaceous gland which is responsible for providing the moisture and leads the presence of latent lip impression.
With these uniqueness of lip impression it also added as valuable evidence that found to be at scene of crime and can be used for personal identification of criminal in a court of law. While lacking of other evidences. However, the identification of lip prints in criminal cases is limited due to unavaibility but when it is encountered often considered the key in solving crimes.
